Periodontitis is a disease that causes inflammation and infection of the ligaments and bones which support the teeth. Additionally, it is one of the most chronic diseases in the adult population.
Periodontal disease affects approximately 80% of the population over 65 years. It is the most common cause of tooth loss for people over 35 years.
Visiting the dentist regularly is the key to detect and diagnose the disease early. While it is impossible to regenerate lost bone around the tooth, it is possible to stop bone loss, and our clinic is experienced with this matter. In this way the teeth will stay in the mouth as long as possible.
One of the most common complications we experienced while replacing teeth with implants, is the presence of periodontitis in its active phase. Placing an implant in this state can lead to an equal contamination, resulting in an undesirable process known as peri-implantitis. It causes bone loss around the implant due to an infection in the surrounding tissues.
Resultantly, the implant needs to be removed. In certain cases, a treatment can be implemented for consistent bone regeneration. This technique is not always predictable. In another article it will be discussed in which cases the regeneration is possible, and in which ones not.
This clearly shows the need of periodic monitoring which can be done by the dentist and patient. Only by frequent controls the disease can be decelerated and stopped on time. The control usually involves inspections and palpation of the gum around the implant. Radiography should also be conducted one time per year. In specific cases, a peri-implant probing can measure the degree of peri-implant involvement. Additionally, in other cases the prosthesis supported by the implant can be lifted for profound cleaning.
